Forensic photography is also referred to as crime scene photography or forensic imaging. It is the skill of producing accurate crime scene inform of the photograph that can be used in court or to help in conducting the investigation. Forensic photography is categorized as one of the steps towards collecting evidence related to an individual crime or event.

The depth of field also referred to as the plane of sharpness refers to the area in a photograph in which the objects appear to be in a sharp focus. Crime scene photographs need to be much in focus to show the investigators exactly what happened on the ground or crime scene. The three factors that affect the depth of field include the focal length of the camera lens, the selected lens aperture that the photographer chooses, and the distance between the camera and the subject matter which need to be captured.

Lighting remains to be a vital factor in forensic photography because it enables the photographer to have clear images of the crime scene. This will allow the investigators or the court to get easily a view of what happened. Pictures taken in lower light cases remain to unclear and not preferred in the court room or as a source of evidence. Therefore all the forensic photographers should ensure enough, and simple lighting is always available.

 

  1. What are the fundamentals of composing a good crime scene photograph?

There are fundamental principles which must be observed by the photographer before taking or while taking the crime scene photographs. The crime scene must be undisturbed before the taking of such photos; this will help the investigators or the court to have a clear and exact view of what happened. Numerous photographs should be taken by the photographer. The photographer should also take photographs of long- range, mid-range and close-up this will help the courtroom to have a clear view of the setting in which the crime occurred. This array of photographs segments the crime scene location and shows the manner in which events unfolded. The photographer should also establish scales; such measurement scales help in selecting the appropriate sizes and distances of the images. Camera location is also an important fundamental because it determines the quality of a picture that is to be taken.
